サークル「会報」は２００１年から書いています。でも作家や小説の好みは人それぞれ違いますから「会報」も相手ごとに気に入って頂けそうなのをと勝手に選んで送っていました。女性には「日の名残り」や「ケン・フォレット」、競馬ファンはもちろん「ディック・フランシス」、クリスチャンとかだと「ペーパーバックと聖書」「ミゼレーレ」といったあんばいに・・で、結局だれに何を送ったんだか、分からなくなってしまいました。

ロシア

ロシア下院選挙（Dec. 2, 2007）で大勝したプーチンは大統領以上のスーパー首相になるのでしょうか？（それとも皇帝？）
ロシアの民衆というのは伝統的に農奴の頃から何も変わっていない、民主主義は決して根付かないとも言われます。本当かどうかはともかくRobert Ludlum "The Tristan Betrayal" (2003) では１９９１年クリスマス休暇中のゴルバチョフ首相を静養先の別荘に軟禁し政権転覆を図った事件の黒幕に次のせりふを語らせていました。

"What youﾕre seeing in Moscow today is an end to the madness. A return to stability." "An end to reform, you mean. An end to the remarkable changes that Gorbachev was bringing about." "Too much change is dangerous. It brings only chaos. What you don't seem to know is that in Russia, the most dangerous thing is chaos. Disorder is the greatest threat to our welfare."

１０数年前に読んだキャンペル・アームストロング "MAZURKA" (1988)にはもっと驚きました。政変が起こる３年前の小説なのに既にゴルバチョフ失脚を赤裸々に予測した記述があったからです。

"The Russian people need a little fear in their lives, emotional austerity. This isn't the West. 　Democracy isn't our historic destiny. Adversity is the glue that always held Russia together. Stalin understood it. Brezhnev also understood it." "The Soviet Union is heading hurriedly toward disintegration, the public is doomed to explode from internal pressure. What is going on here is a struggle between the old ways and the new. There were flaws in the old ways, but it was a system that worked in its own fashion, one that people had come to accept. To toss all this away, to open windows and throw the old system! It would release all kinds of turmoil, all manner of ancient, frustrations and ethnic demands for sovereignty and self-determination throughout the Baltic, the disintegration of Soviet influence in satellite republics, a decomposition that might spread beyond the Soviet Union itself and into Poland and East Germany and Czechoslovakia, an anarchic state of affairs that would doom the upstart brigade who ruled these days from the Kremlin." "Change of this magnitude is always painful. But many people, even those who basically agree but argue that we're doing things too quickly, are going to have to adapt - or perish." Olsky said the word 'perish' softly, almost in an undertone. Volvovich thought he'd never heard it pronounced in such a menacing way. "Certain people belong in another era. ラドラムは米国作家、またキャンベルは英国の作家なので、ロシア人への偏見(bias)があるかもしれないとの見方もできますが、作家による調査というのは入念なものですから、上記登場人物の口を借りたせりふもそれぞれ根拠があってのことでしょう。　特にキャンベルについてはその洞察力と先見性に驚かされたことでした。

銀河 (Galaxies)

銀河には渦巻銀河、だ円銀河、不規則銀河 - Spiral/ Lenticular/ Elliptical or Irregular galaxies - などがあります。　星雲だと Emission, Reflection, Planetary, Supernova, Dark nebulae などが知られています。宇宙のはるか遠くまでハッブル望遠鏡などが映し出す時代になりましたが、意外に分からないのがわれわれの太陽系が所属する「銀河系」です。

紀元前２０００年頃のストーンヘンジ（巨石列柱遺跡／古代の天文台）以前から天文学はあったのですが太陽、月、星の運行を観測することで方角や季節の移り変わりを正確に知るのが目的でした。天体観測に望遠鏡を使うようになったのは１７世紀のガリレオ以降ですが、宇宙像全体を考えるようになったのは２０世紀に入ってからです。はるか遠くにある無数の銀河の姿が正確に観測されるようになったのに、内側からしか見ることのできない我々の「銀河系」はその形すらよく分からないのですね。

しかし、こうしたことは案外あたりまえなのかも知れません。人間だって他人のことは分かっても自分のことが一番分ってないとか・・そりゃあ、話が違うだろ？・・では地球４６億年の歴史について、地層や化石から遠い時代のことは沢山データがあるのに、深海のくわしい状況とか、ひんぱんに起こる噴火や地震の発生メカニズムはほとんど分かっていない。毎年発生する台風、ハリケーン、トルネードの正確な予測はおろか天気予報は３日以上先だとまず当たらないといった・・ Weather prediction is not quite an exact science, and I never fully trust those weather boffins. Like my instructor used to say, little boys who tell lies grow up to be weather forecasters. (Glenn Mead "SNOW WOLF")

科学者

米国のミステリ作家James Rollins "Black Order" (2006)の巻頭にダーウィンとアインシュタインの言葉が引用されています。アインシュタインのほうは有名で定訳もありますが、ダーウィンは知らないので勝手に意訳をつけています。

生物は進化するものという事実は、生物学が絶えず進化する理論にもとづく科学であるという厄介な立場においている。（そもそも科学は不動の真理を前提とすべきであるのに）生物学は科学なのか、それとも信仰なのか？

★ 不変の法則が「科学」の基本という認識に立つと、両科学者の言葉は何かそぐわない気がします。しかし、証明・実証が「科学的」かどうかを決めるというのは１７世紀後半ニュートンの時代から１９世紀末までに完成した「古典物理学」の手法です。科学には古典物理学が要求する証明が不可能な分野も数多く存在します。最先端科学の量子力学はそのひとつですし、フラクタル、カオス、複雑系も不変とは逆に数式の解は無限にあるとか、存在そのものが「居たりいなかったり」確率的という世界です。

ヨーロッパ文明の最古層ケルト社会のドルイド神官 (Druids)やギリシャ文明のソクラテスに遡る学問の世界では医学、数学、天文学、地質学その他あらゆる分野の知識を身につけた賢者、偉人がいました。こうした伝説上の哲人の多くは学者であると同時に宗教家でもあったのでした。つまり、宗教と学問は本来一体のもので、高い知識を身につけた人間がリーダーとして民衆の支持を得ていました。（王というのは戦の長ですが、神官、賢人は更に古い時代に遡る部族の長でした。）

★ Bible Code（聖書の暗号）という有名な話があります。ヘブライ語の旧約聖書には神による暗号が隠されているというもので、ニュートン(1643-1727)はそのためヘブライ語を学び死ぬまでに膨大な時間をその研究に注いだそうです。古くからあるそうした研究の集大成的な本がマイケル・ドローズニン"The Bible Code" (1997)／聖書の暗号 (Michael Drosnin／木原武一訳新潮社)ですが、文中で目を引いたのが次ぎの記述です。

『地球上の過去・現在・未来のできごとが、まとめて瞬間的に記録された。』

「時間」というのは一定方向に進むだけで、それを遡ることも、また飛び越えることもできないというのが三次元世界の法則ですが、アインシュタインは「光の速度で移動すると時間は止まる」と言っています。だとすると地球上の過去／現在／未来がすべて一緒になって瞬時にわかる「別の次元」というのもあるかも知れない・・？　それが必ずしも絵空ごとでないことを次の著書は示しています。

★ ハーバード大学の宇宙物理学者リサ・ランドール博士の "The Warped Passages" (2005)は現在最先端の物理学者達による高次元空間宇宙論のひとつで、数式を使わない一般向けの著書としてベストセラーになっています。

次元の違いというのは低次元から高次元は何も見えないが、逆に高次元からは一目瞭然といったものです。たとえば、あなたが二次元空間にいたとします。そこは無限に横に広がる世界で縞模様だか幾何学模様だかもわかりませんが、三次元から見ればひと目でわかります。我々の三次元から高次元は何も見えませんが、逆からは三次元世界は時空(time and space)を超えて一目瞭然ということです。

"The Warped Passages" の翻訳は「ワープする宇宙」向山信治監訳／塩原通緒訳日本放送出版協会￥3045で出ています。原書のペーパーバックは1900円ですが、やはり難解なので読むのは翻訳がオススメです。

ダニエル・シルバ／異色の作家

数年前の話ですが何気なく手にした "The English Assassin"(2002)が面白かったので、あっというまに３冊読んでしまいました。まだほかにもあったと紀伊国屋へでかけたのですが、日本ではさほど人気がないのでしょうか、買った本を補充した跡もなく "The Confessor"(2003)しか残ってませんでした。

ダニエル・シルバは米国の作家ですが、上記２冊の主人公Gabriel Allonはイスラエルの諜報機関Mossadのスパイです。本職はバチカンで２年間修業した古典絵画の修復技術者(restorer) ですが彼のpermanent addressはロンドンという設定なのでロンドン、ローマ、バチカンをはじめヨーロッパ各地の描写が非常に正確です。

"The Confessor"は第二次大戦中ナチスのユダヤ人狩りに協力したと非難された法王ピオ１２世とその一派を糾弾するバチカン内部の秘密を抉るテーマですので、ダン・ブラウンのベストセラー "The DA VINCI CODE" 同様カトリック教会からは排斥されているかも知れません。

１９９９年の作品"The Marching Season"は上記２冊の小説には及びませんが、冷戦終了に伴い冷遇されることを恐れた英米仏など８カ国の情報機関のトップが秘密組織を作り大資本の軍事産業と結託して、世界各地のテロを背後で操る陰謀という大胆なテーマを打ち出しています。バチカンの過去を糾弾した"The Confessor"といいこの作家は体制批判の鋭さが身上というか、読者に強い印象を与えます。小説はきわめて本格的ですが、こうしたテーマのとりあげ方から異色の作家と言えるかもしれません。

ジャーナリスト出身だけに文章力はしっかりしており、雄大な構成で結構良い作品群なのに・・どういうわけでしょう、翻訳がないのが不思議です。

The Remains of the Day (by Kazuo Ishiguro, 1989)

イギリス映画「日の名残り」の原作として有名なこの小説は、第一次大戦後から第二次大戦までのヨーロッパ外交史の一面と、それにかかわった英国の貴族階級没落直前のありようを、親子２代に亘って名門の館に仕えた執事が回想するものです。ただストーリーの展開は晦渋をきわめ、あまり読みやすいものではありませんが、時代錯誤で保守的な執事の、いかにも古風で風格のある重厚な英語の語り口が全編をおおって当時の社会状況や田園風景を見事に描き切った筆力は秀逸です。

映画はアンソニー・ホプキンスとエマ・トンプスンが好演で、原作のセピア色の雰囲気を実に良くあらわしていました。脇役ですが豪邸ダーリントン・ホールを最後に買い取った米国の富豪がスーパーマン俳優のクリストファー・リーブです。彼は１９９５年、落馬によるケイ椎損傷のため首から下がマヒし車椅子生活を余儀なくされましたが映画が作られたのは１９９３年なので元気な頃の姿が見られます。（残念ながら2004年10月心不全で亡くなりました、まだ５２才でした。）

なお本の題名は長く仕えたダーリントン侯への忠誠と愛惜を胸に、かたくなに伝統にこだわる生き方を守り通した主人公が最後に吐露する言葉からです。

After all, what can we ever gain in forever looking back and blaming ourselves if our lives have not turned out quite as we might have wished? Perhaps, there is something to his advice that I should cease looking back so much, that I should adopt a more positive outlook and try to make the best of what remains of my day.

著者は日系英国人ですが典型的な英国人の snobbish な一面を主人公の独白にこめていたのが面白かったので、ひとつだけ引用でご紹介します。

Continentals are unable to be butlers because they are as a breed incapable of the emotional restraint which only the English race is capable of. Continentals - and by and large the Celts, as you will no doubt agree – are as a rule unable to control themselves in moments of strong emotion, and are thus unable to maintain a professional demeanour other than in the least challenging of situations.

英語と米語（トム・クランシー "RED RABBIT"から）

英語と米語の違いをスペリングや発音、アクセントを取り上げて言うのは易しいのですが、それ以上にくわしく説明をするのは我々日本人には難しいものです。同じ英語を使う英国人と米国人がその辺りを実際どのように感じているのかをトム・クランシーが英国勤務になった主人公ジャック・ライアン (CIA Agent) の口を借りて、幾つか例を挙げているのが "RED RABBIT" (2002) です。その中からごく一部ですがご紹介します。

(1) The scary part was going to be driving. He'd already bought a Jaguar - pronounced jag-you-ah over here, he'd have to remember - but both times he'd walked to it at the dealership, he'd gone to the left-front door instead of the right. The dealer hadn't laughed at him, but Ryan was sure he'd wanted to. At least he hadn't climbed into the passenger seat by mistake and really made an ass of himself. He'd have to remember all that; the 'right' side of the road was the left. A right turn crossed oncoming traffic, not a left turn. The left lane was the slow lane on the interstates - motorways, he corrected himself. The plugs in the wall were all cockeyed.

(2) The countryside was green and lush. It was a clear day, some white fluffy clouds aloft, and the sky a delightful blue. He'd never experienced rain over here. Yet they had to have it. Every third man on the street carried a furled umbrella. England was just different from America to be dangerous, he decided. There were a lot of similarities, but the differences rose up and bit you on the ass when you least expected them.

(3) Why the hell, Ryan wondered, did you need two spouts to put water in the sink, one for hot and one for cold? At home you just held your hand under the damned spout, but here the water had to mix up in the sink first, and that slowed you down.

(4) The sports page "it was called 'sport' (singular) over here" told Jack everything he'd ever need to know about soccer, which wasn't much.
(5) "Thank you, honey," Ryan acknowledged, turning to the op-ed page(*) of the Times. The letters to the editor here were a positive hoot, and the quality of the writing throughout the papers was superior to anything he found in the American print media. Well, they had invented the language over here, Ryan figured, and fair was fair. The turn of phrase here was often as elegant as poetry, and occasionally too subtle for his American eye to appreciate. He'd pick it up, he figured.

(6) Ryan was watching TV, trying to get used to the British sit-coms. He'd grown to like British humor - they'd invented Benny Hill, after all. That guy had to be mentally disabled to do some of the things he did - but the regular series TV took a little getting used to. The signals were just different, and though he spoke English as well as any American, the nuances here - exaggerated, of course, on TV - had a subtle dimension that occasionally slipped by him. But not his wife, Jack observed. His wife was laughing hard enough to gag, and at things he barely comprehended.

(7) Brits were good people, and their food, Ryan thought, was wrongly maligned, but they didn't know beans about coffee. Jack had always been something of a coffee snob.

(8) In England they called them toilets, which had always struck him as a little
crude in an otherwise gentle country.

また、ジェフリー・アーチャーは英国作家ですが、彼の小説にも次のようなシーンがあります。これは言葉よりも習慣の差ですけど米国人が英国で戸惑う一例でもあります。

He ordered a Diet Coke with lots of ice. The British would never understand the meaning of "lots of ice", and he was not surprised when the waiter returned a few minutes later bearing a long glass with three small ice cubes floating in it.
