英会話と歌 ２０１５年1月１５日 例会報告
北朝鮮のトップ暗殺計画を描いたソニーピクチャーズ社製作の風刺映画公開を巡る北側からのサイバー攻撃問題や米国政府の非難・対応を詳細に記したJapan Timesの記事を音読。ソニー側の対応として、結局は、一部の国を除いて上映されることになったが、アジアでは、豪州、新西蘭の２国のみで上映されることになった。日本では上映されない、アジアの文化では、其処に在るユーモアが旨く翻訳されないであろうという見方が背景にあると記されていること、更に、現トップ金正恩の父であった金正日が、２００４年、別の風刺映画を無視したように、それに習って、否、更に進んで、寧ろ今回の映画の世界初公開を主催したいと申し出るくらいのことにした方が、北のPRになり、もっと良かったのではないかと記事が締め括くられているのは、やはり米国人が書いた記事であろう、興味深い。
次に使った教材は、１９５９年のキューバ革命以降から続いた米国とキューバの国交断絶状態を正常化する交渉を記事にしたもの。亡命者などの入り組んだ現況も記されているが、記事の締め括りでは、正常化の動きを止められないし、５０年間、何も結果を齎さなかった米国側の封じ込め政策を、相互の事情は残るものの、共和党が今なお正常化すべきではないと主張するのは間違いであると、言い切っている。斯様に、しっかりと物を言うのが、英字新聞の記事であると思われる。サークルでは、国交悪化の背景（革命、危機）、当時の東西冷戦時の世界的危機からの脱却に向けてJFKが果たした功績などについて、日本語とは違う、正確な英語表現を学びながら、振り返る討議も行い、有意義であった。

We read aloud an article in the Japan Times on the recent cyberattack allegedly made by North Korea on Sony Pictures, in accusation of its satiric film about Kim Jong Un. It was interesting in that the article ends with such a sentence as “Kim Jong Un could have ignored the film by taking a page from his father who experienced a satire in 2004 or, better still, could have offered to host the world premier” to counter the satire with a sense of humor.
We then read an article taking up the talks between the U.S. and Cuba to restore their diplomatic relations. The writer insists that the denouncement by Republicans is a mistake and it is hard to deny that the embargo policy has lasted for more than 50 years with no significant merits on either side or rather failed. We restudied and discussed the historic background behind the worsened relations; Cuban independence from Spain, the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 and the important role JFK played in the said crisis during the Cold War between the East and the West.
